What does the SOI Analyzer measure?

The SOI Analyzer assesses performance across four key areas:

1. Enterprise-Wide Commitment

  • Sustainability Strategy: Is sustainability embedded in the business model and backed by clear goals?

  • Leadership Alignment: Are leaders and managers aligned on sustainability priorities?

  • Organization and Culture: Is sustainability part of the organizational culture?

2. Operational Enablement

  • Innovation Management: Does the organization’s innovation system support sustainability?

  • Process Innovation: Are processes optimized to reduce resource use and waste?

  • Supply-Chain Innovation: Are sustainability goals extended to the supply chain?

3. Inclusive Innovation

  • Creativity and Design: Are innovation capabilities directed toward sustainability?

  • External Collaboration: Are SOI initiatives supported by external partners?

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Are affected communities and stakeholders engaged?

4. System & Cycle Orientation

  • Circular Business Model: Is the business model restorative and circular?

  • Product-Lifecycle Innovation: Are products designed for extended use and recyclability?

  • Systems Innovation: Is a whole-system approach used to maximize environmental benefits?

SOI practices and capabilities comprising 61 practice questions over 12 categories to determine the extent to which various best practices are followed and capabilities exist. The practice cover innovation for sustainability, key elements of sustainable business model, and practices directly associated with creating a circular economy. Capability categories include Leadership Alignment, Organization and Culture, Creativity and Design, Stakeholder Engagement, Product Lifecycle Impact, with all innovation practices tested being specific to SOI.

What is the result of the SOI survey?

A report will include the Capability Category Ratings in a radar chart and in a bar chart. The scores of the four elements: Enterprise-wide Commitment, Operational Enablement, Inclusive Innovation, Systems and Cycle Orientation provide an overview how strong or weak the 12 important capabilities for suitainability-oriented innovation of the company.

The diagram shows a score for each group, which is calculated as follows. First, the answer values are multiplied by the weight for the question, and these are summed for the group. This sum is the raw score for the group. Since each group has a different number of questions with different values and weights, the raw score is normalized to a value between 0 and 10 by dividing it by the maximum possible raw score for the group.
